A big step...

Starting at pre-school is a very big step in your child's development.  Often it is the very first time that a child will be separated from his/her parents, so getting a happy introduction is very important. Here are a few tips that may help; It is a good idea to make short visits with your child, before commencing full-time, so that you both get to know the people and how the group operates. Get to know staff and helpers - if your child sees that you are happy and comfortable, then he/she will soon be comfortable with them too. Be prepared to stay in the group until he/she is ready to be left. Dress your child in easily washed clothes with easy fastenings and sensible shoes or trainers. Also bring indoor shoes/slippers or a pair of wellies for outdoors, named and in a bag.  In summer we ask that children bring hats to wear during outside play. It is important to collect your child promptly at the end of the session.  It can be very upsetting for a small child to be the only one who isn't collected. If someone different is to collect your child make sure that the staff know.

Outdoor Play

Outdoor play treated as an incredibly important part of our children's daily routine.

By participating in engaging, motivating and achievable tasks and activities in an outdoor and woodland environment each participant has an opportunity to develop intrinsic motivation, sound emotional and social skills. These, through self awareness can be developed to reach personal potential.

Children use full sized tools, play, learn boundaries of behaviour; both physical and social, establish and grow in confidence, self-esteem and become self motivated.

So outdoor play will aim to develop:

  • enhanced personal and social communication skills

  • increased physical health

  • enhanced mental and spiritual health

  • enhanced spiritual, sensory, and aesthetic awareness

  • the ability to assert personal control and increased sensitivity to one's own well-being.

  • develop self esteem, take personal responsibility, co-operate with and respect the needs of others;

  • extend their personal horizons through greater appreciation and understanding of the world and its peoples around them;

  • understand the need for sustainable relationships between people and their environment;

  • enhance practical problem solving and team work skills.

  • promote a positive and knowledgeable response towards personal health and well being.

Children, and more and more adults, need time to thoroughly explore their thoughts, feelings and relationships.

This time and reflective practice develops understanding of the world, the environment and everything within it through the use of emotions, imagination and senses.

Due to all the proven benefits of outdoor play on children's development, we make it a top priority to ensure the children get enough time outdoors and in our woodland areas throughout the year.
